1896-97 Page Fence Giants trade card. Graded a 40 by SGC. The Page Fence Giants were one of the most important teams of the 19th century. This card pictures some of the top Negro Leaguers of the day, most notably Grant "Home Run" Johnson and Charlie Grant. Johnson should already be in the Hall of Fame. Grant was an excellent player, but it most known for being the player that John McGraw tried to get on his Baltimore team by renaming him "Chief Tokahoma" and claiming he was a Cherokee Indian. Grant was outed as African-American when many of Grant's African-American friends and relatives starting filling up the stands to watch him play. This is a particularly nice example of this important early Negro League card.
